We made a late visit for dinner to BAR, a restaurant serving apizza and beer, on Crown St. in New Haven, Connecticut, on July 31 2024.
Bar had been recommended to us earlier in the day by a sales clerk in the nearby liquor store; he said we must try pizza while in New Haven. We queried whether he meant New Haven’s famous apizza or pizza but he assured us they were both the same.
We later learnt that apizza is a New Haven style pizza (apparently pronounced “ah-BEETZ”), originating from 1925, and baked in a coal-fired oven for a slightly charred crust.
His recommendation turned out to be a good one!
We arrived around 8.30pm and Bar was heaving with young, trendy people. We were seated immediately and service was super-quick, efficient and friendly.
We learnt from the menu that Bar served red pies (tomato sauce) or white pies (ricotta and garlic) cooked in a brick oven, and that they had interesting toppings such as clams or mashed potato with bacon!
After the turmoil of wondering whether to order small, medium or large, we sensibly went for a small apizza to share.
We ordered:
π The Carnivore (a red apizza with mozzarella, smoked brisket, meatballs, pepperoni and garlic) = $29.50
πΊ Corona (bottle) = $7.00
πΊ Blue Moon (19.2 oz can) = $7.50
π’ Tax = $3.23
π° Total = $47.23
π Gratuity (25%) = $11.00
The apizza was perfect: a crispy and crunchy thin base, a balanced mix of meats for the topping, which no scrimping on the amount of succulent brisket (which did indeed taste smokey) and just the right amount of garlic.
We couldn’t see any sides or dips on the menu - and this was a good thing: the flavors on the apizza did not need anything to complement them.
The only quibble we had was that our Carnivore apizza wasn’t evenly sliced. By that we mean the segments weren’t in two equal halves and this almost led to a fight over the last tasty slice! Joking aside, we did have to compromise and take fair bites from that last slice!
Our server was interested in where we were visiting from, so we told him the story of our current travels across New England. We asked about Bar and he told us that it had opened in the early 1990s and had evolved into the bustling restaurant that we saw tonight. The restaurant doubled up as a nightclub and we can also see the brewing vats for the house beers on sale there.
We left extremely satisfied with our meal and gave a 25% gratuity to recognise the very good service given in Bar.
