THE SANDWICH SHOPPE on Merchants Row in Rutland, Vermont, is the kind of place you want to find when exploring a small city. And we luckily did just that on the morning of Monday July 29 2024.
It is a “mom and pop” type-business, owned by the Zullo family for over 40 years: the American story!
The food we enjoyed wasn’t just great - hot, fresh, a big portion and filling - but the people running the business were great too.
The two gents in the store, which we later learnt were Mr Terry Zullo and his 95 year-old father Dave, were friendly, charismatic and welcoming, and we could have sat there all day watching their interactions.
For us it was enjoyable to see the real people of Rutland, and we took in their phrases (“You’re welcome, brother”) and accents; likewise, we definitely stood out to them with our broad northern English accents. When Terry was preparing our food he asked about our visit and he was interested to hear about our plans to explore New England starting with Rutland.
We ordered:
🥯 Breakfast sandwich: sausage, egg, cheese on bagel = $7.00
🥯 Breakfast sandwich: bacon, egg, cheese on wrap = $7.00
🥯 Hashbrown x 2 = $3.00
😢 Tax = $1.75
💰 Total = $18.75
💦 Smart Water (bottle) = $2.75 (inc tax)
We returned for breakfast the next day and Terry made us laugh when he took our order saying: “Your usual?”
What a lovely place to find at the heart of Downtown Rutland!
Post Script: We had a lot of bagels as we travelled many miles across New England, but it is safe to say that the ones from The Sandwich Shoppe were the best! Give it a visit if you’re ever in Downtown Rutland!
