PAYING OUR RESPECTS AT THE 9/11 MEMORIAL

NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM, 180 Greenwich St., NY 10007

We feel it is important that any visitor to New York City, particularly first timers, should visit the NATIONAL 9/11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM.  As on our previous visit to New York City in summer 2017, we once again visited the memorial in Lower Manhattan to pay our respects to the 2,977 people who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001.

Located at the World Trade Center site, the impressive and fitting memorial was dedicated on September 11th 2011, 10 years after the attacks, and was based on the footprints of the fallen Twin Towers. The two pools contain the largest man-made waterfalls in America.

The Memorial features the names of 2,983 victims from the 9/11 attacks and the World Trade Center bombing of 1993 inscribed on bronze parapets around the pool edges, with the names thoughtfully arranged by meaningful adjacencies based on relationships.

On this visit of July 27th 2024, the Memorial’s North Pool was undergoing cleaning and maintenance which meant the waterfalls were turned off. The South Pool was operating as usual.

As we walked around the memorial site, we could see flowers and American flags placed next to some of the engraved names. One name even had a photograph of the victim pinned to it.

Very moving.

The 9/11 Memorial is a contemplative site, but we were surprised to see some visitors smiling and taking selfies.

Before we left, we sought out the ‘Survivor Tree’, a Callery Pear tree which had been discovered amidst the wreckage of the attacks showing signs of life, despite having been badly burned. Recovery workers rescued the tree and it was taken away to be looked after in a nursery in the Bronx.

In December 2010 it was replanted at the 9/11 Memorial in full health. This miracle tree shows that life goes on, but we must never forget the shocking events of September 11th 2001.

This is a special place in New York City and while the 9/11 terror attacks didn’t define the city, the way those who tragically lost their lives are remembered does indeed.

May they all rest in peace.
